What to say

What to say when your child holds in their poop

Three things to say when the holding starts, why each one works, and when to involve your doctor.

The moment: Child is afraid to poop on potty, holds poop for days, or shows anxiety about pooping Ages: 2-5 years

Say this

1. Body Continuity Education

easy Β· 5-10 minutes

  • Your body is so smart! It takes what it needs from food and gets rid of extra.
  • Poop is the extra stuff your body doesn't need. Your body stays whole and safe.
  • It's kind of like a snack - your body keeps the part it needs, and lets the rest go as poop.
  • After poop comes out, we say bye to it! It's done its job helping your body.

Why it works

Young children worry about body parts separating. Understanding that poop is 'extra food' not a body part reduces existential anxiety about pooping.

The line for you: This anxiety is developmental and normal. Education reduces fear more than pressure ever could.

2. Gradual Desensitization

intermediate Β· days to weeks

  • You can poop in your diaper in your room. No rush.
  • Want to try pooping in your diaper while in the bathroom? Just to get comfortable.
  • How about sitting on the potty with your diaper on? Just practicing.
  • You're getting closer. Your body is figuring this out at your speed.

Why it works

Forcing creates trauma. Gradual exposure lets them build comfort at their own pace. Each small step builds confidence for the next.

The line for you: Slow is fast. Forcing creates trauma. Gradual steps build lasting success.

3. Manage Your Own Anxiety

advanced Β· ongoing

  • I notice I'm worried about this, and that's my feeling, not your problem.
  • My child's struggles today don't predict struggles months from now.
  • I can be patient while their body figures this out.
  • This is temporary. They will not be withholding poop when they're 10.

Why it works

Children absorb parental anxiety. Your belief in their capability becomes their belief. Your calm is contagious.

The line for you: Yes, they're struggling, AND yes, they will figure this out. My confidence helps theirs grow.

Before it happens again

  • Separate pee and poop learning (pee first, poop later)
  • Teach about body continuity (poop is extra, not a body part)
  • Avoid showing disgust or negative reactions to poop
  • Ensure diet supports easy bowel movements
  • Model casual, positive attitudes about pooping yourself

Questions parents ask

Why is my child holding it in?
Almost always because it hurt once. One hard, painful poo is enough to start a cycle where holding makes the next one harder, which makes holding more appealing. It is a pain problem before it is a behaviour problem.
When should I call the doctor?
Sooner than most families do. Withholding that lasts more than a week or two, or comes with pain, blood, soiling or a hard belly, needs medical help. Softening the stool usually has to happen before any script can work.
Should I put the nappy back on?
If your child will only go in a nappy, letting them for now is a legitimate step, not a failure. Fear of pain is the thing to solve first; the toilet part can wait a few weeks.
